Talk
Stephanie Watson presented on appliance development tools and how they are used to develop and maintain software appliances, virtual appliances and even your own custom distribution. She introduced the appliance development procedure outlined in Application to Appliance: A Hands-on Guide and then demonstrated how rBuilder, rMake and Conary are used in development and ongoing maintenance of an appliance.
In addition to demonstrating how the tools work, both from a developer and from an end-user perspective, Stephanie described how the tools make it easy to create a small operating system image that supports an application and to ensure robust operating system updates and efficient ongoing maintenance.
Stephanie addressed the following points:
The "appliance" concept
Conary features and their contributions to appliances
rBuilder and rMake for developing appliances and custom distributions
Basing appliances on the rPath Appliance Platform
The appliance development process
