Stephanie Watson

Stephanie Watson is the author of Application to Appliance: A Hands-on Guide and writes the documentation and maintains the associated app2app.rpath.org development environment. She maintains a Simple Machines Forum appliance and is a developer on rPath's MediaWiki appliance, each based on the rPath Appliance Platform.  She also maintains custom derivatives of those projects for rPath's Forum and Wiki appliances. After a decade of educational and technical training experience, Stephanie joined rPath where she has written corporate training materials and documentation, particularly about the appliance development experience.

Talk

Stephanie Watson presented on appliance development tools and how they are used to develop and maintain software appliances, virtual appliances and even your own custom distribution. She introduced the appliance development procedure outlined in Application to Appliance: A Hands-on Guide and then demonstrated how rBuilder, rMake and Conary are used in development and ongoing maintenance of an appliance.

In addition to demonstrating how the tools work, both from a developer and from an end-user perspective, Stephanie described how the tools make it easy to create a small operating system image that supports an application and to ensure robust operating system updates and efficient ongoing maintenance.

• The "appliance" concept
• Conary features and their contributions to appliances
• rBuilder and rMake for developing appliances and custom distributions
• Basing appliances on the rPath Appliance Platform
• The appliance development process
