John Doppke
Biography:
John Doppke is the product manager for IBM WebSphere Application Server Community Edition, IBM's J2EE 1.4-certified application server based on the open source Apache Geronimo project. John has been working with both open source and commercial J2EE technologies for 8 years, first as a developer and architect and now as a product manager. Working with WAS CE and Geronimo has exposed John to many interesting issues around open source communities, especially around how corporate interests and community interests interact in a successful open source project. John lives in Chicago, and in his copious (?) free time, he is pursuing an MBA part-time at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business; he tinkers with LAMP technologies for his own domain; and he enjoys singing with the Chicago Choral Artists.
Talk:
If open source projects are driven by and for their community of developers and users, how do businesses fit into the ecosystem? And how can businesses get involved with open source and do what's right for the community while also doing what's right for their bottom line? In this talk John used IBM's involvement in open source as an example of how community interests and corporate interests can align well enough to produce a product that's good for community and business customers alike.
This talk will took place on Saturday, April 7th, 2007 at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). John also participated in the Is FLOSS Suited for the Professional Environment? panel discussion.
